§ 354A.091 — Teachers on Extended Leave

Plain-Language Summary

Teachers in St. Paul ISD 625 who are granted extended leave can keep earning retirement service credit by continuing to pay employee contributions. Both the teacher and the school district must pay the required contributions based on the teacher's salary from the year before the leave. The leave cannot last more than five years, and if the teacher stops paying, they lose active membership.

Practical Notes
If you are a St. Paul teacher on extended leave, you must make your retirement contributions by June 30 each year to get service credit. If you miss a payment, you cannot make it up later. You also cannot earn credit in any other Minnesota public pension plan during your leave.
