§ 354A.093 — Break in Service to Provide Uniformed Service

Plain-Language Summary

Teachers in the St. Paul Teachers Retirement Fund Association who leave teaching to serve in the military can buy back up to five years of retirement service credit when they return. The teacher and employer must both make contributions based on the salary the teacher would have earned. The teacher must return to teaching within the time frames set by federal law.

Practical Notes
Military service does not have to cost you retirement benefits. When you return from service, you have a window of time (generally three times the length of your service, up to five years) to make the required payments. If you pay less than the full amount, your service credit is reduced proportionally.
