§ 356.001 — Purpose of Public Plans

Plain-Language Summary

This section states that public pension plans in Minnesota exist only to benefit their members and members' beneficiaries. The money in these plans cannot be used for any other purpose. If a plan is terminated, every member gets their earned benefits, and the money must still be used only for members.

Practical Notes
This is a core protection for public employees. It means the government cannot raid pension funds for other purposes. If your pension plan were ever shut down, you would keep a share of the benefits you have earned up to that point.
