§ 356.30 — Combined Service Annuity

Plain-Language Summary

This section allows people who worked in more than one public retirement plan in Minnesota to combine their service from all plans to qualify for a retirement annuity. The annuity from each plan is based on the person's service and salary in that plan, but total service across all plans is used to determine eligibility and benefit levels.

Practical Notes
If you worked in multiple public sector jobs in Minnesota (for example, as a teacher and then a state employee), you can combine your service credit to meet vesting requirements and qualify for benefits from each plan. Your highest five-year average salary across all plans is used for the calculation. You must apply for benefits from all plans within a one-year period.
