§ 43A.11 — Veteran's Preference

Plain-Language Summary

This section creates veteran's preference for state employment. Disabled veterans are listed first in the applicant pool, followed by nondisabled veterans, then nonveterans. Recently separated veterans who meet minimum qualifications must be considered and the top five must be interviewed. Spouses of disabled or deceased veterans can also use the preference.

Practical Notes
If you are a veteran applying for a state job, you get hiring preference. Disabled veterans are ranked highest. If you recently left military service, the top five recently separated veterans must get an interview. If you are not selected, you must be told why in writing.
