§ 475.52 — Bond Issues; Purposes

Plain-Language Summary

This section lists what types of projects each kind of municipality can issue bonds for. Cities can issue bonds for public buildings, sewers, streets, parks, utilities, and other public purposes. Counties can bond for courthouses, roads, libraries, and hospitals. Towns can bond for town halls, roads, and equipment. School districts can bond for school buildings and facilities.

Practical Notes
Before issuing bonds, a municipality must confirm its project fits one of the authorized purposes listed here. All municipalities can also issue bonds to pay court judgments, refund old bonds, or fund pension liabilities. This section is the starting point for determining whether a proposed bond issue is legally permitted.
