§ 518.148 — Certification of Dissolution

Plain-Language Summary

After a divorce is granted, the court must prepare a certificate of dissolution -- a simple document that proves the marriage has been dissolved. Either party can request certified copies of this certificate from the court administrator.

Practical Notes
When this applies: After a divorce decree is entered in Minnesota. Who this affects: Anyone who needs to prove they are divorced (for example, to change their name, update government records, or remarry). Key points: The certificate includes both parties’ names, the date of the decree, and any court-approved name changes. It serves as official proof of the divorce. If a certificate was not prepared at the time of divorce, either party can request one later.
