§ 518.619 — Custody or Visitation; Mediation Services

Plain-Language Summary

Establishes mediation services for contested custody and parenting time disputes. A court-appointed mediator tries to help parents reach an agreement. Mediation cannot be required when there is physical or sexual abuse. Mediation sessions are private and records cannot be used as evidence.

Practical Notes
If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or parenting time, the court may send you to mediation. A trained mediator will try to help you reach an agreement. If there has been abuse, the court will not make you go to mediation. What you say in mediation stays private and cannot be used against you in court.
