§ 524.1-301 — Territorial Application

Minnesota's probate laws apply to people who lived in Minnesota at death and to property located in Minnesota, even if the owner lived in another state.
524.1-301 TERRITORIAL APPLICATION.
Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, this chapter and chapter 525 apply to (1) the affairs and estates of decedents, missing persons, and persons to be protected, domiciled in this state, and (2) the property of nonresident decedents located in this state or property coming into the control of a fiduciary who is subject to the laws of this state.

Practical Notes
If a loved one who lived in Minnesota passes away, Minnesota probate law applies to their estate. If they lived elsewhere but owned Minnesota property, that property is still handled under Minnesota law.
