§ 524.2-504 — Self-proved Will

Plain-Language Summary

A self-proved will is one that includes sworn statements from the person making the will and the witnesses, signed in front of a notary or other authorized officer. This makes it easier to accept the will in probate court because the witnesses do not need to testify later.

Practical Notes
When this applies: When someone wants to make their will easier to prove in court after they die. Who this affects: Anyone making a will in Minnesota, plus the witnesses who sign it. Key points: The will can be made self-proved at the time of signing or at any later date; it requires notarized affidavits from the testator and witnesses; a signature on the self-proving affidavit counts as a signature on the will itself.
