§ 540.152 — Service of Process on Unions, Groups, or Associations

Plain-Language Summary

When a union or association based outside Minnesota does business or takes actions within the state, it is automatically considered to have appointed the Minnesota Secretary of State as its agent for receiving legal papers. Lawsuits related to activities in Minnesota can be served through the Secretary of State, and this service is legally valid.

Practical Notes
This ensures that out-of-state unions and associations can be served with lawsuits in Minnesota for their activities here. Service through the Secretary of State is valid even if the organization has no permanent Minnesota presence. This applies to any actions resulting in damage or loss within the state.
