§ 611.216 — Criminal and Juvenile Defense Grants

Plain-Language Summary

The Board of Public Defense gives grants to nonprofit organizations that provide criminal and juvenile defense to people who cannot afford lawyers. These organizations must accept felony, gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and juvenile cases. They must match 10% of their state funding from non-state sources. The Board can cut off funding if the money is being misused or the quality of defense is poor.

Practical Notes
These grants support nonprofit legal defense organizations that serve low-income Minnesotans. Organizations on Leech Lake or White Earth Reservations need tribal council approval before receiving funds. Each organization must submit reports about their caseloads and outcomes. Employees or agents who discriminate based on sex, race, or other protected categories can be charged with a gross misdemeanor.
