§ 62K.10 — Geographic Accessibility; Provider Network Adequacy

Plain-Language Summary

Health carriers must have enough doctors, specialists, and other providers in their networks so that enrollees can get care without unreasonable delay. Networks must meet federal time and distance standards, include mental health providers, and include essential community providers. Carriers can apply for a waiver if they cannot meet requirements in a specific area, but waivers expire after one year.

Practical Notes
If you have trouble finding in-network doctors or face long wait times, your health carrier may not be meeting network adequacy requirements. You can file a complaint with the Commissioner of Health. In counties where a carrier actively markets individual plans, it must offer at least one plan with access to more than one health care provider system.
