§ 62M.17 — Continuity of Care; Prior Authorizations

Plain-Language Summary

When you switch health plans, your new plan must honor prior authorizations from your old plan for at least 60 days. If your health plan changes its criteria for approving a service during the plan year, the old criteria still apply to your already-approved treatment until the next plan year. There are exceptions for safety issues and drug substitutions.

Practical Notes
If you change jobs or health plans, your approved treatments are protected for at least 60 days. Submit your old authorization documents to your new plan right away. Also, if your plan changes its rules mid-year, treatments you already had approved cannot be taken away until the next plan year starts. This prevents sudden disruptions to ongoing care.
