§ 631.425 — Releasing Offenders for Employment

Plain-Language Summary

A person sentenced to jail may be granted work release, allowing them to continue employment while serving their sentence. The court has discretion to order this at sentencing or before commitment. Earnings are collected and used to pay maintenance costs, family support, fines, and restitution.

Practical Notes
Work release can help you keep your job and support your family while serving a jail sentence. Ask your attorney to request it at sentencing. You must follow all rules – violations can result in full confinement for the remainder of your sentence and loss of good-time credit. Sentences of 10 days or more earn one day off for every two days of good behavior.
