§ 65A.298 — Homeowner's Insurance; Fortified Program Standards

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires homeowners insurers to offer premium discounts or rate reductions to owners of homes that meet the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) Fortified program standards with a hail supplement. Both new construction and existing homes retrofitted to meet these standards qualify for the discount. Insurers must file actuarially justified rates with the commissioner for these discount programs.

Practical Notes
If you build a new home or retrofit your existing home to meet IBHS Fortified standards — which include features like impact-resistant roofing that resists hail — you are entitled to an insurance premium discount. You need to get an IBHS certificate showing compliance and submit it to your insurer before the discount applies. Ask your insurer if they participate in this program and what discount is available.
