§ 97C.211 — Private Fish Hatcheries

Plain-Language Summary

You need a license to operate a private fish hatchery in Minnesota. The license is valid for five years but must be renewed each year. Hatcheries must follow DNR rules and can raise fish for sale, stocking, angling, or processing. People can fish at licensed private hatcheries without a fishing license if the operator gives them a certificate.

Practical Notes
If you want to start a private fish hatchery, you need a license from the DNR. Fish from outside Minnesota must be approved by the commissioner before you can bring them in. Production and sales information for private hatcheries is kept confidential. Visitors can fish at your hatchery without a state fishing license if you provide the required certificate.
