§ 97C.301 — License Required to Take Fish

Plain-Language Summary

You need a license to fish in Minnesota. An angling license is required for hook-and-line fishing. Dark house spearing requires both a spearing license and an angling license. Netting requires both a netting license and an angling license. Nonresidents must also complete an aquatic invasive species affirmation when buying a fishing license.

Practical Notes
Buy your fishing license before you go fishing. Some people are exempt, including children under 16 and certain seniors. Nonresidents must complete an aquatic invasive species affirmation as part of buying their license. Aquatic farm operators can take fish under their farm license without needing a separate fishing license.
