§ 97C.315 — Angling Lines and Hooks

Plain-Language Summary

Anglers can usually only use one fishing line. Two lines are allowed when ice fishing, in parts of Lake Superior designated by the commissioner, and on the Minnesota River below Granite Falls Dam and the Mississippi River below St. Anthony Falls. Only one hook per line is allowed, with exceptions for artificial flies and artificial baits with multiple hooks.

Practical Notes
When open-water fishing, stick to one line unless you are on the Minnesota River below Granite Falls Dam or the Mississippi below St. Anthony Falls. Ice anglers can use two lines. Fly fishers can use up to three flies on one line for bass, trout, crappies, sunfish, and rock bass. Artificial lures like crankbaits with multiple treble hooks count as a single artificial bait.
