§
Subdivision 1.Designation.
Castoroides ohioensis, commonly known as the giant beaver, or capa in Dakota and amik in Ojibwe, is designated as the official state fossil of the state of Minnesota. §
Subd. 2.Photograph.
A photograph of the giant beaver, approved by the commissioner of natural resources, shall be preserved and may be displayed in the Office of the Secretary of State.

Practical Notes
This designation was adopted in 2025. The giant beaver was an ice-age mammal that once lived in what is now Minnesota. The inclusion of Dakota and Ojibwe names reflects recognition of indigenous knowledge and connection to the land.
