§ 1.148 — State Grain

Plain-Language Summary

Wild rice, also called manomin, is the official state grain of Minnesota. A photograph of wild rice may be displayed in the Office of the Secretary of State.

Practical Notes
Wild rice (Zizania aquatica) has deep cultural significance for Minnesota’s Ojibwe people, who call it manomin (’the good berry’). Minnesota is the largest producer of natural wild rice in the United States. Harvesting wild rice on public waters is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources.
