§ 1.21 — Great Lakes Basin Compact

Plain-Language Summary

Minnesota joined the Great Lakes Basin Compact, an agreement among eight states to work together to protect and develop the water resources of the Great Lakes. The compact created the Great Lakes Commission to study water issues, make recommendations, and coordinate action among the member states.

Practical Notes
Through this compact, Minnesota participates in regional water resource planning for the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Commission can recommend policies on flood control, pollution, navigation, fishing, and water conservation, but its recommendations are not binding on member states.
