§ 10.581 — Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month

Plain-Language Summary

April is designated Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month in Minnesota to educate the public about genocide and human rights violations and to help prevent future atrocities. The designation recognizes the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which came after the Holocaust. The governor may promote and encourage observance of the month through educational activities.

Practical Notes
April was chosen partly because it includes Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah), which falls in April, and because it coincides with the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Schools, community organizations, and religious groups often hold educational events during April related to genocide awareness and prevention. This observance is not a legal holiday.
