§ 10.584 — Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month

Plain-Language Summary

May is designated Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month in Minnesota to raise awareness about pregnancy and postpartum mental health conditions that affect up to one-third of new mothers each year. The state recognizes that these mood and anxiety disorders are common but often go undiagnosed and untreated. The governor may promote the observance and educate the public about identifying symptoms and finding treatment.

Practical Notes
Pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders such as postpartum depression are treatable but often stigmatized, leading many mothers to suffer silently. Healthcare providers, new parent support groups, and mental health organizations often use May to promote screening and treatment resources. Mothers experiencing these symptoms can seek help from their OB-GYN, midwife, or mental health provider.
