§ 10.595 — Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week

Plain-Language Summary

The third full week of September each year is designated Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week in Minnesota. Mitochondrial diseases occur when the mitochondria—the energy producers inside cells—are damaged by genetic defects, drugs, or free radicals, leading to progressive and often devastating illnesses that affect roughly one in 4,000 children. Minnesotans are encouraged during this week to learn more about mitochondrial diseases and their impact on affected families.

Practical Notes
Mitochondrial diseases are a group of serious conditions with no cure and limited treatment options. Families affected by these diseases often face heavy medical, financial, and emotional burdens. Awareness week activities are organized by patient advocacy organizations and hospitals to raise funds and educate the public about these rare but serious diseases.
