§ 10.597 — American Allies Day

Plain-Language Summary

June 30 is designated American Allies Day in Minnesota to honor foreign-born persons who fought in conflicts around the world alongside or on behalf of the United States armed forces. The governor must issue a proclamation each year honoring this observance. Schools are encouraged to provide instruction about the role of America's allies in military conflicts, with special emphasis on those who later immigrated to Minnesota.

Practical Notes
American Allies Day has particular resonance in Minnesota, which is home to large communities of Hmong, Somali, Liberian, and other immigrant groups whose members fought as allies of the United States in various conflicts. Schools may use June 30 as an occasion for lessons on immigration, military history, and the contributions of immigrant communities. The observance is not a legal holiday.
