2025 Session Last amended: 2024 session

§ 124D.60 — Rights of Parents

Plain-Language Summary

Parents of English learners must be notified in writing, in both English and their primary language, within 30 days of the school year starting that their child is in an English learner program. Parents have the right to visit the program, request a conference, and withdraw their child from the program at any time. Districts must encourage parent involvement.

Practical Notes
If your child is placed in an English learner program, you must receive notice in your own language. You can visit the program, ask for a meeting to learn more about it, and pull your child out at any time by giving written notice to the principal or superintendent. You can also re-enroll your child later.
