§ 168A.21 — Disclosure of Security Interest

Plain-Language Summary

A lender whose name appears on a vehicle title must share information about the loan when the vehicle owner or another lender asks in writing. If the lien is for unpaid child support, the holder of that lien must tell the vehicle owner the total amount owed when asked in writing.

Practical Notes
Vehicle owners have the right to get details about any lien on their car by making a written request to the lienholder. This is useful when trying to pay off a loan or understand how much equity is in a vehicle. Child support liens on vehicles have their own disclosure rule to help obligors understand what they owe.
