§ 297A.72 — Exemption Certificates

Plain-Language Summary

Buyers claiming a sales tax exemption must give the seller an exemption certificate explaining why the purchase is exempt.

Practical Notes
The certificate must be in the form the commissioner prescribes and must include the purchaser’s name and address, an identification number (such as a Minnesota tax ID, another state’s tax ID, a federal Employer Identification Number, or a driver’s license or state ID number), the type of business, and the reason for the exemption. A blanket exemption certificate can be used for continuing future purchases and must be updated as needed to keep this information accurate.
