§ 611A.52 — Definitions

Plain-Language Summary

This section defines key terms used in the Crime Victims Reimbursement Act. A 'crime' is conduct in Minnesota that threatens personal injury or death. A 'victim' is a person hurt or killed by a crime, or hurt while trying to stop a crime. 'Economic loss' covers medical bills, lost income, funeral costs, child care, and moving expenses.

Practical Notes
Most motor vehicle accidents are not covered as ‘crimes’ unless the driver was drunk, hit-and-run, or intentionally caused harm. Victims include Good Samaritans who get hurt trying to prevent a crime. Economic loss for injury is capped at actual costs, with the total per victim limited to $50,000.
