2025 Session Last amended: 2023 session

§ 477C.04 — Appropriation, Payment, and Administration

Plain-Language Summary

Police state aid is paid to municipalities on October 1 each year, with interest accruing at 1% per month if payment is late. The aid must be applied toward the municipality's employer contribution to the police and fire retirement fund. Overpayments can be corrected over up to three years.

Practical Notes
Municipalities must use police state aid money for police retirement costs, not general operations. If your municipality was overpaid, the correction can be spread over three years. Underpayments are also corrected over up to three years and come from the general fund.
