§ 546.10 — Challenges

Plain-Language Summary

In civil cases, each side gets two peremptory challenges to remove jurors without giving a reason. Six jurors remain after challenges are exercised. Either party can also challenge jurors for cause, and both sides can question potential jurors about their qualifications.

Practical Notes
Challenges alternate, starting with the defendant. If defendants have opposing interests, the court may allow up to two additional peremptory challenges per side. After all challenges, the first six remaining jurors make up the jury.
