§ 611A.66 — Law Enforcement Agencies; Duty to Inform Victims of Right to File Claim

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires every law enforcement agency that investigates crimes to tell victims about their right to apply for reparations, including a telephone number and website where they can get an application form. Agencies must also help the reparations board carry out its duties and, within ten days of a request from the board, supply the reports the board asks for. Those reports must be provided even if they would otherwise be confidential, including certain juvenile records, and the data keeps the same confidentiality classification it had with the law enforcement agency.

Practical Notes
This section makes law enforcement the front-line source of information for crime victims, who often learn about reparations only through the investigating agency. It also gives the reparations board a fast track to investigative reports (a ten-day turnaround) and overrides ordinary data-privacy restrictions, while preserving the original confidentiality classification of any data released.
