§ 97A.425 — Record and Reporting Requirements for Dealers, Tanners, and Taxidermists

Plain-Language Summary

This section requires people licensed to buy or sell wild animals, tan hides or dress raw furs, or mount specimens to keep complete records of their transactions and report to the commissioner. The records must show who animals were obtained from and transferred to, the dates, detailed descriptions, and any seal, tag, or trapping license numbers, and must be kept for two years after the license expires and made available for inspection. Most licensees must file an annual report by March 15. Taxidermists must also properly dispose of cervid (deer family) carcasses, parts, and skull-cleaning waste at a permitted facility, with certain finished or fully cleaned items exempt.

Practical Notes
A person is not required to be licensed to tan hides, dress furs, or mount specimens if they are not paid for the service. Records for buying, selling, tanning, or dressing must be kept in a book supplied by the commissioner, and taxidermists should retain proof of proper cervid waste disposal for inspection.
