§ 120B.022 — Elective Standards

Plain-Language Summary

This section covers elective academic standards, which are standards that school districts create locally for career and technical education and world languages. It also establishes Minnesota's bilingual and multilingual seal programs, which recognize high school students who show proficiency in languages other than English, including Indigenous languages and American Sign Language.

Practical Notes
Students who speak multiple languages can earn gold or platinum bilingual seals on their diploma and transcript. These seals may translate into college credits at Minnesota State colleges and universities. Schools cannot charge students a fee for the seal. Students must request college credits for their seal within three years of graduating from high school.
