2025 Session Last amended: 2021 session

§ 13D.01 — Meetings Must Be Open to the Public; Exceptions

Plain-Language Summary

This is the core of the Open Meeting Law. It requires that all meetings of government bodies -- including state agencies, counties, cities, school boards, and their committees -- be open to the public. Votes must be recorded, meeting minutes must be available, and materials given to members must also be available to the public.

Practical Notes
If you want to attend a city council, school board, county board, or any government committee meeting, this law gives you the right to be there. The government body must record all votes in minutes that you can inspect during business hours. Before closing any meeting, they must state the reason on the record.
