§ 142B.06 — Unlicensed Emergency Relative Placement

Plain-Language Summary

This section allows a county agency to place a child with a relative who does not yet have a foster care license in an emergency. The county must inspect the home within three working days, and the relative must apply for a foster care license within ten days of the placement.

Practical Notes
If a child needs immediate placement and a relative is willing to help, the county can place the child before the relative gets a foster care license. The relative must cooperate with a home inspection and complete the license application quickly. Background checks are still required, and a placement cannot be made if someone in the home has a disqualification that cannot be set aside.
