§ 142F.30 — Financial Assistance for Community Action Agencies

Plain-Language Summary

The commissioner of children, youth, and families can provide financial assistance to community action agencies, Indian reservations, and migrant and seasonal farmworker organizations to run community action programs. State funding supplements federal Community Services Block Grant funds and must be distributed based on the poverty level population in each area. Together, these funds help local organizations address the root causes of poverty.

Practical Notes
Community action agencies receive both state and federal funds under this section to serve low-income residents. The allocation of funds takes into account where poverty is most concentrated, so communities with higher poverty rates receive proportionally more support. If you work at or want to start a nonprofit serving low-income communities, contact the state office to learn about eligibility and application processes.
