§ 144F.01 — Fire Protection and Emergency Medical Services Special Taxing Districts

Plain-Language Summary

This law allows two or more cities, counties, or townships to join together and create a special taxing district to provide fire protection or emergency medical services. The district is governed by a board of elected officials from each member community and can levy property taxes, issue debt, and hire employees or contract for services.

Practical Notes
If your community is considering joining a fire or EMS special taxing district, know that withdrawing requires two years’ notice and you may still owe taxes for outstanding debt. The district must report its levies and spending to the commissioner of revenue and the legislature.
