§ 148E.260 — Disciplinary Actions

Plain-Language Summary

This section lists the disciplinary actions the board can take against a social worker who violates the law. Options include denying an application, permanently or temporarily revoking a license, suspending a license, restricting scope of practice, adding conditions to keep a license, issuing a reprimand, imposing a civil penalty up to $10,000 per violation, and requiring reimbursement of investigation costs. In urgent cases, the board can suspend a license immediately without a hearing if continued practice poses a serious risk of harm.

Practical Notes
The board can combine multiple disciplinary actions for the same violation. A temporary emergency suspension can happen very quickly—within days—when public safety is at risk, with a hearing to follow shortly after. A formal reprimand is a relatively mild discipline but becomes permanent public record. Civil penalties can add up quickly for ongoing violations. Social workers have the right to a contested case hearing to challenge disciplinary actions.
