§ 148E.055 — License Requirements

Plain-Language Summary

This section sets the requirements to get each of Minnesota's four social work licenses. Each license level requires a certain social work degree, passing the appropriate national exam, a criminal background check, no violations of professional standards, and payment of fees. The section also allows licensure by endorsement for social workers already licensed in other states and by completion of provisional license requirements.

Practical Notes
Social workers from other states can get a Minnesota license through endorsement if they hold an active equivalent license elsewhere. Exam results expire after eight years, so applicants should apply promptly after passing. The one-year application window means applicants who miss that deadline must reapply. Criminal history does not automatically disqualify an applicant, but the board will review it.
