§ 149A.47 — Transfer Care Specialist

Plain-Language Summary

A transfer care specialist is someone registered with the commissioner who can remove a dead body from the place of death and take it to a funeral home, working under a licensed mortician's supervision. They must complete a seven-hour training program and three hours of continuing education each year. A mortician can supervise up to four transfer care specialists at a time.

Practical Notes
This registration was created in 2024 to allow non-licensed staff to assist with body removals. Transfer care specialists cannot perform other mortuary science tasks like embalming or arranging funerals. They must be employees of a licensed funeral establishment.
