§ 154.01 — Registration Mandatory

Plain-Language Summary

This law requires everyone who practices barbering in Minnesota to be registered with the Board of Barber Examiners. Barbers can only work in registered barber shops or schools. Every barber shop must be run by a registered barber, and every barber instructor must also be registered.

Practical Notes
You cannot cut hair for pay in Minnesota without a current barber registration. Working without registration can lead to penalties. Barber shop owners must also have a current shop registration card. If you want to teach barbering, you need a separate instructor registration and can only teach in registered barber schools.
