§ 156.19 — Extra-label Use

Plain-Language Summary

This section controls the use of veterinary drugs on food-producing animals in ways not listed on the drug label. Only a veterinarian can prescribe extra-label drug use, and only after determining that no properly labeled drug will work. Extended withdrawal periods before marketing the animal products are required.

Practical Notes
If you raise animals for food, you cannot use drugs in ways not on the label without a veterinarian’s prescription. The veterinarian must document why regular labeled drugs are not effective. Treated animals must be identified and given extra time before their meat, milk, or eggs can be sold.
