§ 168.012 — Vehicles Exempt From Tax or License Fees

Plain-Language Summary

Certain vehicles do not have to pay registration taxes or fees. These include government vehicles, school buses, vehicles owned by nonprofit charities for transporting disabled persons, and ambulances. Fire trucks, police cars, and government ambulances do not need to display license plates.

Practical Notes
Even exempt vehicles usually need to be registered, just without paying the tax. Unmarked police and investigation vehicles must still display regular license plates.
