2025 Session Last amended: 2024 session

§ 168.12 — Plates

Plain-Language Summary

This section covers license plates in Minnesota, including their design, how long they are valid, and how they are issued. Passenger car plates are issued for a seven-year period and must be replaced when they reach seven years old. The commissioner also issues yearly registration stickers (tabs) to show the year of registration.

Practical Notes
You must display both plates (front and rear) on passenger vehicles. Plates must be visible from 1,500 feet at night. You will receive new plates automatically when yours reach seven years old at renewal time.
