§ 168A.29 — Fees

Plain-Language Summary

This section lists the fees the state charges for vehicle title transactions. An original title costs $8.25 plus an additional $3.50 public safety surcharge. Recording a security interest (lien) on a title costs $2. A duplicate title costs $7.25. Certain disabled veterans are exempt from title fees. All fees must be paid before a title is issued.

Practical Notes
Buyers and lenders should budget for these fees when completing vehicle title transactions. The fees are relatively modest but must be paid or the department will not process the title. Fee exemptions apply to qualifying disabled veterans under a separate statute. When applying for a title at the same time as registering a vehicle, the title fee replaces (rather than adds to) some registration fees.
