§ 169.18 — Driving Rules

Plain-Language Summary

This section covers the basic rules for driving on Minnesota roads: stay on the right side, pass other vehicles on the left, give bicycles at least three feet of clearance when passing, do not follow too closely, and move over or slow down for emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and other authorized vehicles stopped on the side of the road.

Practical Notes
When this applies: Whenever you drive on a Minnesota road. Who this affects: All drivers. Key points: Drive on the right half of the road. Pass on the left and do not cut back in until safely clear of the other vehicle. Give bicycles at least 3 feet when passing. On multi-lane highways, slower traffic must move out of the left lane to let others pass. When passing emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility vehicles, or road maintenance vehicles stopped with lights on, you must change lanes if possible, or slow down if you cannot. This ‘move over’ law also applies to stalled vehicles with hazard lights on. Following too closely (tailgating) is illegal.
