§ 169.222 — Operation of Bicycle

Plain-Language Summary

Bicyclists in Minnesota have the same rights and duties as other vehicle drivers. They must generally ride near the right side of the road, use hand signals for turns and stops, and have a front light and rear reflector when riding at night. Bicyclists on sidewalks or crosswalks have the same rights as pedestrians.

Practical Notes
When this applies: Whenever you ride a bicycle on Minnesota roads, sidewalks, or paths. Who this affects: All bicyclists in Minnesota and drivers who share the road with them. Key points: Bicyclists must follow the same traffic laws as cars, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. Ride near the right edge of the road, but you can move left to pass, turn, or avoid hazards. At night, you need a white front light visible from 500 feet and a red rear reflector visible from 600 feet. You must signal turns and stops with hand signals. Children under 1 year old cannot be carried on a bicycle. Two bicyclists can ride side by side but must not block traffic.
