§ 169A.284 — Comprehensive Assessment Charge; Surcharge

Plain-Language Summary

A person convicted of DWI must pay for their own substance use disorder assessment plus a $25 assessment charge (and an extra $5 surcharge for repeat offenders within five years). The court can waive the $25 charge for people who cannot afford it, but not the assessment itself.

Practical Notes
Expect to pay for your chemical dependency assessment as part of your DWI sentence. If you qualify for public assistance programs (Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare), those may cover the assessment cost.
